Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable antimicrobial film composition derived from Citrus sinensis (Malta) peel waste and a method for preparation thereof. The film composition comprises Citrus sinensis peel powder and/or Citrus sinensis peel ethanolic extract, at least one biodegradable polymer selected from starch, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and combinations thereof, glycerol as a plasticizer, and citric acid as a crosslinking agent. The film is prepared by dispersing the peel-derived material and polymeric components in an aqueous medium, heating under controlled stirring to obtain a homogeneous suspension, casting the suspension onto a substrate, and drying to obtain a self-supporting film. The resulting film exhibits a thickness ranging from 0.20 mm to 0.35 mm and tensile strength ranging from 0.04 MPa to 8.75 MPa. The film further demonstrates antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms including Salmonella typhi and Bacillus cereus, thereby inhibiting microbial growth and reducing spoilage. The invention provides a sustainable approach for valorization of fruit-processing waste into value-added biodegradable materials, reducing dependence on conventional petroleum-based plastics while providing enhanced mechanical stability and antimicrobial functionality. The film is particularly suitable for food packaging applications requiring biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and antimicrobial packaging materials. Fig 1 to 6.
