MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441100797 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG on December 19, 2024, for “method For Estimating Three-Dimensional (3d) Head Position Of A Driver And System Thereof”.

Inventors include Kasi Jaswin; Harshita Soni; Nikhil Tirumala; Disha Jain; and Shuaib Ahmed.

The application for the patent was published on July 10, 2026, under issue no. 28/2026.

Abstract: Present disclosure provides method and system for estimating 3D head position of a driver within a vehicle. The method comprises capturing an image of the driver and identifying a region of interest focused on the driver’s head within the image. Further, a virtual camera perspective is created by generating a cropped image centring on the head position. Ground truth coordinates of the head in the 10 original image are then transformed to align with the virtual camera perspective. This alignment ensures that the coordinates in the virtual camera perspective correspond accurately to the driver’s head position. Finally, a pre-trained estimation model is applied to the transformed, cropped image to determine the 3D position of the driver's head, facilitating accurate and real-time monitoring of driver orientation and position. The method improves precision of estimation by standardizing head 15 positioning relative to the camera’s viewpoint, which is essential for driver assistance and safety systems.
