MUMBAI, India, March 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531001740 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Guwahati, Assam, on Feb. 14, 2025, for 'a device to detect wear anomaly events of an orthotic device and method thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Shubham Ramesh Vernekar; Kavyashree Venkatesh; and Dr. Shakuntala Acharya.

The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Disclosed herein is provide a device and a method for detecting wear anomaly events associated with use of an orthotic device. The device comprises a wearable element positioned in contact with an anatomical part on which the orthotic device is worn, the wearable element including physiological sensors and motion sensors. The device processes sensor data captured from the sensors and determines device usage data including device usage patterns and stress exerted on the anatomical part during each usage time period. The device also determines movement pattern data indicative of gait phase segmentation cycles, gait symmetry, and deviation from normal gait patterns. The device further detects at least one wear-anomaly event based on a combined evaluation of the device usage data and the movement pattern data and enables objective monitoring of orthotic usage behavior and gait characteristics to identify abnormal wear conditions during use."
