MUMBAI, India, March 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511122546 A) filed by Graphic Era, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'a food packaging material composition and method thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Rupa Khanna Malhotra.

The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a food packaging material composition and a method for its preparation, wherein the composition comprises algal biomass, plasticizers, water, and additives. The algal biomass, primarily consisting of polysaccharides such as alginate, agar, or carrageenan, forms a dense hydrophilic network that provides structural integrity and excellent gas barrier properties. Plasticizers, including glycerol or sorbitol, are incorporated in the range of 10-30% to enhance flexibility and prevent brittleness, while additives such as natural fibers, essential oils, or antimicrobial agents improve strength and functionality. The composition is processed through steps of polysaccharide extraction, mixing with plasticizers and water, casting into films or molding into shapes, and drying to obtain a biodegradable packaging material. The invention offers a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic packaging by providing good mechanical strength, flexibility, and barrier performance, making it suitable for short to medium shelf-life food products."
