MUMBAI, India, Sept. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431016960 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on March 8, 2024, for 'a method for producing graphene or graphene derivative from waste oil.'

Inventor(s) include Chandrani Pramanik; Sourav Choudhury; Kamal Raha; Trilochan Bagarti; Manjula Gupta; Amartya Bhattacharyya; and Nitish Kumar.

The application for the patent was published on Sept. 12, under issue no. 37/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure relates to a method for producing graphene or graphene derivatives from waste oil, such as slop oil. The method for producing graphene or graphene derivative from slop oil involves the steps of heating a mixture of the slop oil, a catalyst and a solvent under inert atmosphere to obtain the graphene or the graphene derivative. The method of the present disclosure employing waste oil produces enhanced yield of graphene or its derivative with reduced defects."
