MUMBAI, India, Nov. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411005578 A) filed by Birla Institute Of Technology And Science, Pilani, Rajasthan, on April 28, 2024, for 'a microbial consortium and process for simultaneous bio mitigation of co2, so2, and no from flue gases via suspended bioreactor system.'
Inventor(s) include Anand, Abhishek; Gupta, Suresh; and Raghuvanshi, Smita.
The application for the patent was published on Nov. 28, under issue no. 48/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A Microbial Consortium and Process for Simultaneous Bio mitigation of CO2, SO2, and NO from Flue Gases via Suspended Bioreactor System The present invention relates to a hypersaline, extremophilic, and pollutant-tolerant microbial consortium and a process for simultaneous biomitigation of carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxide (NO) from flue gases in a suspended bioreactor system. The microbial consortium comprises Bacillus cereus SSLMC2 for assimilating SO2 and NO, and Bacillus tropicus SSLMC1 synergistically functioning to convert SO2 and NO into sulfate and nitrate/nitrite and fix CO2 into biomass. The process involves cultivating the microbial consortium in municipal wastewater-based growth media under aerobic or microaerophilic conditions, intermittently introducing flue gas into the bioreactor at controlled flow rates and maintaining operational parameters of 37 C and 120 rpm agitation. The invention further provides a suspended bioreactor 100 with a reactor body 101, Rushton impeller 102, sintered steel sparger 104, baffles 106, and a control unit to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer. The process achieves high mitigation efficiencies of 92.1% for CO2, 84.64% for SO2, and 96.91% for NO, along with biomass recovery and product extraction."
