MUMBAI, India, Aug. 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411006587 A) filed by Chairman, Defence Research & Development Organisation, New Delhi, on Jan. 31, 2024, for 'a movable easy to install environment friendly toilet with anaerobic digestion based faecal matter management system.'

Inventor(s) include Soumya Chatterjee; Sonika Sharma; Mohan Gunvant Vairale; Sampriti Kataki; Santosh Kumar Gupta; and Sanjai Kumar Dwivedi.

The application for the patent was published on Aug. 1, under issue no. 31/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a flush toilet system that includes a modular, easy to install superstructure, human waste (faecal matter) treatment and disposal facility (movable, detachable) and an onsite effluent water treatment system with an option to reuse treated effluent water. This invention is specially designed for the locations where conventional human waste treatment facility is not feasible to install. This stand-alone system comprises of modular, portable superstructure with appropriately designed frames, and pocket-screw joinery that can be amalgamated in to sustainable toilet structure within small amount of time. Prefabricated sheet (wall material for the toilet superstructure) can be fitted within the frames inside the groove and ridge of the frames, thus making it easy to (un)install. Human waste treatment and disposal unit (tank) is a specially designed anaerobic chamber, having double walled with PUF insulation. Thermostatically controlled heating elements, to provide optimal temperature for microbial digestion of human faeces, is being attached to the tank, especially working at low temperature areas, resulting in the production of water and gases. The effluent wastewater from tank is being treated by subsequent secondary and tertiary treatments. The system is having an additional option of rain water harvesting and treatment, which will reduce the load on fresh water. Moreover, the digester tank does not require cleaning due to the tank's low sludge production. This invention is having special characteristics like: modular, movable with toeing facility; easy to transport, installation and dismantling; requires minimum human intervention (related to sludge cleaning), water reuse facility; can run using both conventional and non-conventional (solar) power source; makes this comprehensive system innovative and appropriate for the quick deployment/disposition in difficultly accessible, high altitude and low temperature areas, where, the conventional faecal sludge management is extremely limited due to very slow natural degradation (in consequence, deteriorates hygiene and worsen environmental pollution)."
