MUMBAI, India, March 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641025465 A) filed by Meenakshi Academy Of Higher Education And Research; and Meenakshi Ammal Dental College And Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on March 4, for 'a process of preparation of herbal mouthwash for prevention and management of oral mucositis.'

Inventor(s) include Dr Deepanjali M; Dr Shubham Kumar; Dr Kadambari Vivek Kakde; and Dr R J Vijayashree.

The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention shall disclose a method of preparing a mouthwash formulation for the prevention and management of oral mucositis, comprising the steps of: a. extracting freshly ground banana leaf (Musa paradisiaca) with distilled water in an aqueous extraction or with ethanol in a hydroalcoholic extraction to obtain an extract and concentrating the extract and drying to yield a stable powder of banana leaf extract; b. dissolving the banana leaf extract in distilled water to obtain a uniform solution; c. adding sucrose as a sweetener, sodium benzoate as preservative, and sodium lauryl sulfate as cleansing agent into the solution under stirring and incorporating peppermint oil as flavoring and mild analgesic to maintain homogeneity followed by continuing stirring until a clear, uniform mouthwash is obtained, and transferring into sterile bottles under aseptic conditions to obtain the mouthwash formulation. in which the resulting mouthwash exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and mucosal barrier-protective properties suitable for fragile, irradiated oral mucosa. The present invention also discloses a mouthwash formulation for the prevention and management of oral mucositis, prepared by the process as described above."
