MUMBAI, India, March 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641025469 A) filed by Meenakshi Academy Of Higher Education And Research; and Meenakshi Ammal Dental College And Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on March 4, for 'a process of preparation of topical gel formulation for prevention and management of oral mucositis.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a method of preparing a topical oral gel formulation for prevention and management of oral mucositis, comprising the steps of: a. obtaining banana leaf extract (Musa paradisiaca) by aqueous or hydroalcoholic extraction to obtain extract, concentrating and drying the extract to obtain a stable powder of banana leaf extract; b. dispersing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in purified water under continuous stirring until uniform hydration is achieved to obtain hydrated gel base; c. adding the banana leaf extract together with propylene glycol into the hydrated gel base, maintaining homogeneity to form a mixture; d. introducing methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and lexgard, into the mixture under continuous stirring and adding triethanolamine dropwise until the gel reaches a neutral pH to obtain a gel; e. stirring the gel until a uniform gel consistency is achieved, and transferring into sterile containers under aseptic conditions to obtain topical oral gel formulation; in which the resulting topical gel exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and mucosal barrier-protective properties suitable for fragile, irradiated oral mucosa. The present invention also discloses a topical oral gel formulation for prevention and management of oral mucositis, prepared by the process as described above."
