MUMBAI, India, July 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202311085829 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group Ag, Stuttgart, Germany, on Dec. 15, 2023, for 'a seatbelt assembly for a passenger seat in a vehicle.'

The application for the patent was published on July 4, under issue no. 27/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A seatbelt assembly (100) for a passenger seat (170) in a vehicle is disclosed. The seatbelt assembly (100) comprises a seatbelt webbing (110), a latch mechanism (120), a high resistance material (130), and a charge storing device (140). The seatbelt webbing (110) is coupled between a first anchor point (152) on the vehicle structure (150) and a retractor (156). The latch mechanism (120) comprises a tongue (122) slidably configured with the seatbelt webbing (110) and a buckle (124) adapted to mate with the tongue (122). The high resistance material (130) is integrated with the seatbelt webbing (110). In an event of an adverse vehicle condition, the stored electrical energy from the charge storing device (140) is released to flow through the high resistance material (130) for heating the high resistance material (130) and causing the seatbelt webbing (110) to break into at least two parts for releasing of the seatbelt."
