MUMBAI, India, Aug. 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431006391 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on Jan. 31, 2024, for 'a system for controlling necking and flaring of a steel slab in a rolling mill.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure relates to a system (100) and method for controlling necking (10e) and flaring (10d) of a steel slab (10) in a rolling mill (200). The system (100) includes a plurality of sensors (20) positioned at entry and exit of a roughing mill (30) and configured to sense physical parameters of the steel slab (10). A plurality of edger rollers (70) provisioned at the entry of the roughing mill (30) on either sides of the steel slab (10) defining an edger gap (11). The plurality of edger rollers (70) are configured to reduce width of the steel slab (10). A control unit (50) is communicatively coupled to the plurality of sensors and the edger roller. The control unit (50) is configured to generate a short stroke control curve and change the edger gap between the edger rollers to obtain a necking and flaring free steel slab."
