MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611026699 A) filed by Indian Council Of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, on March 6, for 'an apparatus for offshore seaweed cultivation.'

Inventor(s) include Sekar Megarajan; Shubhadeep Ghosh; Ritesh Ranjan; Johnson B; Relangi Durga Suresh; Biji Xavier; Joe K Kizhakudan; Grinson George; A Gopalakrishnan; and Boby Ignatius.

The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an apparatus (100) for offshore seaweed cultivation. The apparatus (100) includes a raft assembly (202) formed by a plurality of floating raft units (102) arranged in parallel rows to create a stable offshore cultivation cluster. Each of the plurality of floating raft units (102) includes a square high-density polyethylene frame constructed from straight longitudinal pipes joined using T-joints to enhance structural strength and durability. A plurality of tube-nets (104) is suspended across each of the plurality of floating raft units (102) to retain seeded seaweed biomass while allowing continuous seawater exchange. A single-point mooring system (106) secures the raft assembly (202) to the seabed through a dead-weight anchor assembly (106-2). Rotational and translational movement induced by wave and current forces reduces structural stress, limits biofouling, and improves nutrient exposure, thereby enabling efficient offshore seaweed cultivation."
