MUMBAI, India, July 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202311085826 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group Ag, Stuttgart, Germany, on Dec. 15, for 'an apparatus for providing retractable seat belt in a vehicle and method thereof.'

The application for the patent was published on July 4, under issue no. 27/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An apparatus (100) and a method for providing retractable seat belt (120) in a rear middle seat (110) of a vehicle is disclosed. The apparatus (100) comprises a sliding mechanism (130) configured with a retractable seat belt (120) associated with the rear middle seat (110) of the vehicle, and a control unit in communication with the sliding mechanism (130). The control unit is configured to detect (302), using one or more sensors, one or more occupants on the rear middle seat (110) of the vehicle; and activate (304), the sliding mechanism (130) for drawing the retractable seat belt (120) out of the rear middle seat (110) for the one or more occupants. Further, in an event of detection of malfunctioning of the retractable seat belt (120), the control unit generates, an alert for notifying the one or more occupants of the vehicle."
