Inventor(s) include Tanya Rawal; Dr. Shipra Agarwal; and Prabh Deep Singh.
The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to an autonomous retail system for processing packaging-free product returns with integrated fraud detection capabilities. The system enables customers to return purchased items without requiring original packaging, thereby reducing environmental impact and improving convenience. It comprises smart drop-off stations equipped with sensors such as RFID, barcode scanners, weight sensors, and image capture devices to authenticate returned items. A feature extraction module processes sensor data and transaction records to generate structured inputs for machine learning models. The fraud detection module employs AI/ML algorithms-including supervised, unsupervised, and deep learning techniques-to identify anomalies such as mismatched items, repeated returns, and tampered goods. Suspicious returns are flagged for manual review or automatically rejected based on risk scoring. The system integrates seamlessly with omnichannel retail platforms, ensuring real-time validation, inventory updates, and refund processing. This invention enhances operational efficiency, minimizes fraudulent activities, and delivers a frictionless return experience for customers."
