Inventor(s) include Miss Priyadarshani Payagonda Patil; and Dr. Smt. Nilofar Shahanwaj Naikawade.
The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a novel herbal umbilical drug delivery system and a method of administration thereof for systemic delivery of bioactive phytoconstituents. The invention discloses a pharmaceutical composition formulated for topical application at the umbilical region, comprising one or more herbal extracts, preferably derived from Melia azedarach, in combination with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers, penetration enhancers, and stabilizing agents. The composition may be formulated as a solid, semi-solid, or controlled-release dosage form, including umbilical suppositories, gels, pastes, or ointments. The umbilical drug delivery system is designed to facilitate systemic absorption of herbal actives through the underlying umbilical tissue network, thereby bypassing gastrointestinal degradation and hepatic first-pass metabolism associated with conventional oral administration. In one embodiment, lipid-based umbilical suppositories are prepared using a fusion method and exhibit suitable melting and disintegration behavior at physiological temperature, enabling effective release of phytoconstituents. In another embodiment, semi-solid formulations provide prolonged retention and controlled release at the umbilical site. The disclosed system offers a non-invasive, patient-compliant alternative for systemic herbal therapy and is particularly useful for the management of inflammatory and immune-mediated disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease. The invention integrates traditional therapeutic concepts with modern pharmaceutical formulation technology to provide an improved and efficient route of herbal drug delivery."
