MUMBAI, India, June 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202548057648 A) filed by Canon Kabushiki Kaisha, Tokyo, on June 16, for 'an image encoding apparatus, decoding apparatus, encoding method and decoding method.'

Inventor(s) include Okawa, Koji; Enokida, Miyuki; and Shima, Masato.

The application for the patent was published on June 27, under issue no. 26/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An image encoding apparatus, decoding apparatus, encoding method and decoding method is provided. The image encoding apparatus divides an image into one or more sub-pictures each comprising basic blocks and encoding the one or more sub-pictures, comprising: a first encoding unit configured to encode, into a sequence parameter set of a bitstream, first information corresponding to a block size of each basic block, wherein the block size of each basic block is derived by performing arithmetic left shift of 1 by a sum of a value of the first information and a predetermined integer, and wherein a basic block is split into a plurality of blocks, and inter prediction can be applied to a block ; a second encoding unit configured to encode, into the sequence parameter set of the bitstream, a flag related to presence of information of a sub-picture; a third encoding unit configured to encode, into the sequence parameter set of the bitstream, a syntax element corresponding to the number of sub-pictures included in the image, and second information of an ID related to a sub-picture in the image, when the flag has a value indicating that the information of the sub-picture is present; and a fourth encoding unit configured to encode, into the sequence parameter set of the bitstream, third information used for identifying arrangement of a sub-picture in the image, wherein in a case where the block size derived based on the first information is 64, a value of the third information is equal to a result of subtracting 1 from a value identified in a unit of 64, wherein when a numerical value indicated by the syntax element is one or more, the third information used for identifying the arrangement of the sub-picture in the image is encoded into the sequence parameter set of the bitstream, and wherein when the numerical value indicated by the syntax element is not one or more, the third information used for identifying the arrangement of the sub-picture in the image is not encoded into the sequence parameter set of the bitstream."

The patent application was internationally filed on Aug. 21, 2020, under International application No.PCT/JP2020/031711.
