In particular, the invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of Saroglitazar calcium comprising condensation of 2-(2-methyl-5-(4-(methylthio)phenyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)ethyl methanesulfonate compound of formula II and ethyl (S)-2-ethoxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanoate compound of formula III to obtain ethyl (S)-2-ethoxy-3-(4-(2-(2-methyl-5-(4-(methylthio) phenyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)ethoxy)phenyl)propanoate (Saroglitazar ethyl ester) compound of formula IV; Reacting ethyl (S)-2-ethoxy-3-(4-(2-(2-methyl-5-(4-(methylthio) phenyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)ethoxy)phenyl)propanoate (Saroglitazar ethyl ester) compound of formula IV with S-Methylbenzylamine; Reacting Saroglitazar SMBA salt compound of formula V with S-Methylbenzylamine in presences of Process water, Acetic acid, Sodium hydroxide, Calcium acetate, Dichloromethane, n-Heptane."
