MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122181 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'automated crop stress detection using rgb imagery and machine learning.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Abdul Rahim A; and Mr. Karthik S.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a method (100) for automated detection of crop stress factors using RGB imagery and machine learning. The method (100) acquires RGB images of agricultural fields using unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with RGB cameras in step (102), applies preprocessing including image normalization and noise reduction in step (104), extracts handcrafted features from preprocessed images including color indices, texture features from Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix analysis, Local Binary Pattern descriptors, and morphological shape features in steps (112, 114), applies DenseNet201 convolutional neural network to extract deep hierarchical features in steps (120, 122), concatenates handcrafted features with deep hierarchical features to form combined feature vector (201), and classifies crop stress conditions using CatBoost ensemble classifier to identify water stress, nutrient deficiency, pest damage, and healthy crop conditions in steps (128, 130)."
