The system (100) comprises the food freshness monitoring apparatus (110) integrated within a food storage compartment (110') of the refrigeration unit (100'), including a housing (112) having an aperture (114) covered by a semi-permeable hydrophobic membrane (116); a multi-gas sensor array (120) to be disposed within the housing (112); an air sampling unit (130) that actively draws air from the food storage compartment (110') into contact with the multi-gas sensor array (120); and a control unit (140) to: receive, sensor signals; perform, baseline correction on the received sensor signals; compare, baseline-corrected sensor signals against predefined freshness threshold values; perform, trend analysis on successive sensor signals over time for food freshness detection; classify, a freshness state of food stored; and deliver, one or more freshness alerts."
