MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641049215 A) filed by Sona College Of Technology, Salem, Tamil Nadu, on April 17, for 'gesture-controlled smart wheelchair with integrated electromechanical bed conversion.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Arul N; Mukesh L R; Shohith S; Sasikumar S; and Sriram G.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses an accelerometer-guided smart wheelchair system that enables intuitive mobility and automated wheelchair-to-bed conversion using simple hand or finger gestures. The system comprises a mechanical support frame including a seat, backrest, and leg rest sections interconnected through a linkage assembly, with drive wheels powered by wheel motors for directional movement. Electromechanical actuators are mounted on the linkage assembly to synchronously reposition the seat, backrest, and leg rest sections between a sitting and a substantially horizontal bed configuration. A gesture sensing module, incorporating an inertial accelerometer, is worn by the user to detect tilt- or motion-based inputs, which are processed by a microcontroller-based control unit. The control unit generates commands for wheel and actuator motors while continuously monitoring safety sensors, including limit switches, obstacle detection sensors, and an emergency stop mechanism. The invention provides a compact, safe, and user-friendly solution for mobility and assisted care, suitable for home, hospital, and rehabilitation environments."
