MUMBAI, India, July 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541060940 A) filed by Sam Varghese George; Sujan P; Sathish G; Someshwar V; and Arulprasanth S, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on June 26, for 'intelligent athletic performance monitoring system for player movement detection and step analysis using yolo.'

Inventor(s) include Sam Varghese George.

The application for the patent was published on July 11, under issue no. 28/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present study aims to contribute to performance analysis in sport by introducing an automated technique that can provide real-time detection and tracking of soccer players and the ball, based on computer vision and tracking techniques. It seeks to learn the behavior of the players by observing the way they move patterns and the level of activity and their way of interacting on the field. The system utilizes deep learning and YOLOv8 for player detection, player tracking, and step counting based ori spatial tracking methods. It offers easy-to-read visual representations of player performance based on the level of player movement and level of activity. The system has proven robust in the presence of dynamic match conditions, such as different lighting, congestion, and rapid motion. Because of its light weight, the system can be deployed on limited-resources devices and potentially can be used in both professional as well as amateur sports. The future work involves the incorporation of multi-camera -- placements; further increasing tracking precision and improving-the-performing metrics for the deeper analysis."
