MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641050543 A) filed by Easwari Engineering College; and Srm Institute Of Science And Technology, Ramapuram Campus, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 21, for 'iot-based smart tunnel fire detection and smoke extraction system.'
Inventor(s) include Harikrishnan V; Bharat Raj R; Iyyappa Prabhu S; and Mrs. K. Hema Priya.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to an IoT-based Smart Tunnel Fire Detection and Smoke Extraction System designed to enhance safety in enclosed environments through real-time monitoring and automated response. The system utilizes temperature, smoke, and gas sensors to continuously collect environmental data within tunnel structures. The collected data is processed using a microcontroller, which analyzes the parameters to detect abnormal conditions indicating potential fire hazards. Upon detection, the system automatically activates safety mechanisms such as alarms, exhaust fans for smoke extraction, and water sprinkler systems, while also sending alerts to authorities through IoT communication. This ensures early fire detection, improved visibility, and efficient evacuation. Unlike traditional fire safety systems, the proposed system provides continuous monitoring and immediate response. The system offers a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective solution for tunnel safety and fire management applications by integrating sensing, processing, communication, and control into a unified platform for smart infrastructure protection and resilience."
