MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641048151 A) filed by Dasari Lavanya; and Sathyabama Institute Of Science And Technology, Ravulapalem, Andhra Pradesh, on April 15, for 'iot-driven smart cart system for automated contactless billing in retail environments.'

Inventor(s) include Ms. Dasari Lavanya; Ms. Narajala Pooja SR; Mr. Pasupuleti Kundana; Mr. Kanchu Dasthagir; Mr. Anadasu Satish; Ms. Gaddam Preethi; and Dr. A. Muthulakshmi.

The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses an IoT-driven smart retail trolley system for fully automated contactless billing in supermarkets and retail environments. The system integrates a UHF RFID reader module, an IoT-capable microcontroller unit, a real-time digital display, a Wi-Fi/BLE wireless communication module, and a contactless digital payment interface within a standard retail trolley chassis. Retail products are affixed with passive UHF RFID tags storing unique Electronic Product Codes (EPCs). As customers place products into the trolley, the RFID reader automatically and simultaneously detects all tags within the trolley, without manual scanning. The microcontroller queries a product database, retrieves item pricing and tax data, and computes a continuously updated billing total displayed in real time on the trolley's display panel. Product removals are equally detected and the bill is adjusted accordingly. All transaction events are transmitted in real time to the store's backend inventory management server via Wi-Fi using MQTT or REST protocols. Upon shopping completion, the customer pays contactlessly via QR code, NFC card, or mobile in-app payment - directly from the trolley - eliminating the need for a billing counter. The system reduces checkout time by over 80%, achieves billing accuracy exceeding 99.5%, supports offline operation during connectivity loss with automatic event queue synchronization, and delivers real-time inventory visibility to store management. The invention provides a scalable, modular, and cost-effective solution for transforming conventional retail checkout into a seamless, automated, and contactless experience."
