MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531130348 A) filed by Asansol Engineering College, Asansol, West Bengal, on Dec. 22, 2025, for 'iot-integrated smart helmet for accident detection and sos alert.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Sheuli Chakraborty; Mr. Sudip Kumar De; and Dr. Avishek Banerjee.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An IoT-based smart helmet system is herein disclosed, engineered for two-wheeler riders to provide autonomous accident detection and SOS alert transmission. The system integrates a multi-sensor impact detection module comprising an accelerometer and gyroscope with a GPS unit for precise location tracking. A central microcontroller processes the acquired sensor data using a trained algorithm to reliably differentiate genuine vehicular crash events from common motion disturbances. Upon accident confirmation, particularly in the absence of a responsive action from the rider, the helmet automatically activates visual and auditory alerts while transmitting a comprehensive SOS message. This message, disseminated via a GSM/Wi-Fi communication interface to emergency contacts and cloud platforms, explicitly includes the GPS coordinates, timestamp, and crash severity estimate. The invention significantly improves rider safety by ensuring immediate post-accident communication, consequently reducing emergency response time and elevating the probability of survivability."
