MUMBAI, India, March 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202517012915 A) filed by 21St Century Medicine, Inc., Fontana, U.S.A., on Feb. 14, for 'method and apparatus for ultra-rapid preparation of corneas for vitrification.'
Inventor(s) include Ge, Xian; Wu, Jun; Wowk, Brian; and Fahy, Gregory, M.
The application for the patent was published on March 7, under issue no. 10/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A method is disclosed for handling, treating, and storing corneas that enables vitrification in air and/or liquid nitrogen vapor and rewarming without appreciable cell loss, cell death, or functional impairment after transplantation compared to untreated control corneas. The method employs extreme cornea shrinkage through osmotic disequilibrium and corneal dehydration, enabling cryoprotectant toxicity to be avoided despite prolonged exposure to peak (vitrifiable) concentrations of cryoprotectant above 0 C and cryoprotectant washout without osmotic buffering. The cornea apparatus enables ideal handling and storage and air cooling inside or outside the container used for storage."
The patent application was internationally filed on July 18, 2023, under International application No.PCT/US2023/070435.
