MUMBAI, India, Sept. 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431021573 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on March 21, 2024, for 'method and system for detecting defects on a pinch roll in a hot strip mill.'
Inventor(s) include Keerthana George; R. Shunmuga Sundaram; Rohit Kumar Agrawal; Navaneethakrishnamoorthi Mohanram; Bonikila Pradeep Reddy; P S S Ganesh; and S Balamurugan.
The application for the patent was published on Sept. 26, under issue no. 39/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Present disclosure relates to a method and a system for detecting defects on a pinch roll (102) in a hot strip mill. The method comprising placing a robot (104) enclosed by a housing (106), on a transport roll (110), adjusting, the robot to align the robot with the pinch roll to inspect the pinch roll. The method includes illuminating at least a portion of the pinch roll through an illumination source provisioned in the robot and detecting the defects on the illuminated portion 10 (114) of the pinch roll through a sensor (116) provisioned in the robot. With timely detection of defects on the pinch roll, a good surface quality of the pinch roll is ensured and as a result, product or steel sheet obtained out of the pinch roll will also be free of defects and of good quality."
