MUMBAI, India, Oct. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411029759 A) filed by Batx Energies Private Limited, Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh, on April 12, 2024, for 'method for extracting rare earth metals from black mass of spent lithium-ion batteries.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A method (100) for extracting rare earth metals from black mass of spent Lithium-ion batteries is disclosed. The method (100) comprises performing leaching of black mass resulting in formation of an aqueous solution, thereby obtaining a leach liquor. The method (100) further comprises agitating solution comprising sodium sulphide, sodium hydroxide, water, and the leach liquor to obtain precipitated cake and metal-ion solution. The method (100) further comprises agitating the metal-ion solution with DEPHA (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid) and sodium hydroxide to obtain manganese sulphate and a first raffinate solution. The method (100) further comprises agitating the first raffinate solution with P-507 and sodium hydroxide to obtain cobalt sulphate and a second raffinate solution. The method (100) further comprises agitating the second raffinate solution with sodium carbonate to obtain lithium sulphate and nickel carbonate. The method (100) further comprises agitating the nickel carbonate with water and sulphuric acid to obtain nickel sulphate."
