MUMBAI, India, July 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202517056377 A) filed by Basf Se, Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany, on June 11, for 'method for separating a mixed hydrocarbon stream comprising n-butenes using a dividing wall distillation column making n-butenes and separation thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Huetten, Frank; Ruether, Feelly; Meyer-Kirschner, Julian; and Zimmermann, Matthias.

The application for the patent was published on July 4, under issue no. 27/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A method for separating a mixed hydrocarbon stream comprising 1-butene, 2-butene, heavier olefins comprises introducing the mixed hydrocarbon stream into the feed section of a dividing wall distillation column. The dividing wall distillation column has a shell defining a middle vapor-liquid contacting area, an upper vapor-liquid contacting area and a lower vapor-liquid contacting area. The middle vapor-liquid contacting area contains at least one vertically oriented partition dividing the middle vapor-liquid contacting area into at least the feed section defined by the shell and the partition and a sidedraw section defined by the shell and the partition. Thermal energy is provided to the dividing wall distillation column via a bottom reboiler. Additional thermal energy is provided to the dividing wall distillation column by withdrawing a liquid fraction from the dividing wall distillation column via a sidedraw, heating and partially evaporating the liquid fraction in a sidedraw evaporator, and directing the heated, partially evaporated fraction back to the dividing wall distillation column. The method maximizes the proportion of thermal energy provided at a relatively lower temperature level while still minimizing the overall energy demand of the process. With all other variables constant, the method further allows for a reduction of the number of plates in the feed section of the middle vapor-liquid contacting area."

The patent application was internationally filed on Nov. 15, 2023, under International application No.PCT/EP2023/081864.
