MUMBAI, India, Nov. 21 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431039011 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on May 17, 2024, for 'method to perform surface hardening of steel and system thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Melwin Sajan.

The application for the patent was published on Nov. 21, under issue no. 47/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure discloses a method (100) to perform surface hardening of steel. The method (100) includes controlling (102) a work tool to form micro-strains on surface of the steel. The surface of the steel is strained higher compared to an inner core of the steel. The inner core is located beneath the surface of the steel. Further, the method (100) includes heating (104) the micro-strained steel to a first temperature at a predetermined heating rate. The first temperature is based on a ferrite-to-austenite phase transformation temperature of the surface and the inner core of the steel. The method further includes quenching (106) the heated steel to a second temperature at a predetermined cooling rate. The steel obtained upon quenching (106) includes a martensite microstructure on the surface of the steel and a combination of ferrite and martensite microstructure in the inner core of the steel."
