MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641018730 A) filed by Dr. RM Akila, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Feb. 19, for 'moringa oleifera extract-loaded chitosan nanoparticles for targeted and sustained treatment of alzheimer's disease.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. RM Akila; A S Athira Sankar; Y S Beula; and S. Siva Nandhini.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a novel pharmaceutical nanoformulation for the treatment and management of Alzheimer's disease. The invention specifically discloses Moringa oleifera extract encapsulated within biocompatible and biodegradable chitosan polymeric nanoparticles, designed to enhance stability, bioavailability, and brain delivery of bioactive phytoconstituents. The nanoformulation is prepared using an ionic gelation technique to obtain nanoparticles within an optimal nanoscale size range suitable for penetration across the blood-brain barrier. The encapsulated extract exhibits controlled and sustained release characteristics, with an initial burst release followed by prolonged release over an extended duration. The formulation demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities, indicating neuroprotective potential and improved neurotransmitter availability. By combining plant-based therapeutics with nanotechnology-enabled drug delivery, the invention provides a safe, effective, and sustained therapeutic approach for mitigating neurodegeneration, reducing cognitive decline, and improving treatment outcomes in Alzheimer's disease."
