MUMBAI, India, July 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541060089 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on June 24, for 'nano herbonumb toothpaste for pain-free oral hygeine.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. M. Sreenath Raju; Dr. Sreedevi D; and Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.

The application for the patent was published on July 11, under issue no. 28/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Oral mucosal pain arises from conditions such as traumatic ulcers, oral lichen planus, mucositis, post-surgical wounds, and infections, causing burning, stinging, or sharp discomfort that interferes with eating, speaking, and daily activities. Conventional treatments, including toothpastes, mouthwashes, and systemic analgesics, provide only temporary relief due to rapid clearance by saliva or systemic side effects, leading to poor patient compliance and inadequate pain management. Nano-encapsulated lappaconitine toothpaste presents a novel, sustained-release anesthetic solution for effective oral mucosal pain relief. The formulation utilizes biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles (PLGNchitosan-based) with mucoadhesive and controlled-release properties, ensuring prolonged drug retention on the mucosal surface. This approach enhances mucosal penetration, improves drug bioavailability, and minimizes systemic absorption, reducing potential side effects. By integrating lappaconitine into a daily-use toothpaste, this innovation ensures consistent, localized pain relief while maintaining oral hygiene. This practical and patient-friendly formulation offers a superior alternative to conventional treatments, improving adherence and optimizing pain management in individuals with oral mucosal conditions."
