MUMBAI, India, Aug. 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431006309 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on Jan. 31, 2024, for 'needle coke with low coefficient of thermal expansion and method of preparation thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Chandrachur Banerjee; Vimal Kumar Chandaliya; and Pratik Swarup Dash.

The application for the patent was published on Aug. 1, under issue no. 31/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure relates to a two-step process for production of needle coke from feedstock, such as coal tar pitch. The said needle coke exhibits low coefficient of thermal expansion as well as homogeneous needle like microstructures. Process involves a two-step coking approach in which feedstock with very low quinoline insoluble (QI) content is employed. The said feedstock is subjected to two step coking process to obtain the required microstructure. Coking is done both at atmospheric pressure as well as at elevated pressure. This two-step process proves to be advantageous over conventional single step coking process as it ensures release of volatile mass from the anisotropic matrix that can readily form the needle like microstructure upon final coking process."
