Inventor(s) include Ms. Kalpita Jagtap; Ms. Riya Shinde; Dr. Shrutika Patil; Ms. Aakanksha Bhawal; Dr. Pranati Tilak; and Dr. Meera Deshmukh.
The application for the patent was published on July 11, under issue no. 28/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to the formulation and characterisation of a niacinamide-based solid sunscreen stick intended to provide broad-spectrum ultraviolet (UV) protection alongside dermato-functional benefits. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), a well-established bioactive agent, was selected for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and skin barrier-enhancing properties. The formulation comprises physical UV filters-zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-combined with skin-conditioning excipients including shea butter and natural waxes, to ensure optimal spreadability, sensory properties and application stability. To address the cosmetic limitations of mineral sunscreens, red iron oxide was incorporated to impart a medium skin-tone tint and effectively minimise white cast. The antioxidant potential of the formulation was quantitatively assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Additional evaluations included pH, spreadability, mechanical integrity, and accelerated stability testing. The results affirm the multifunctionality of the developed formulation, demonstrating both efficient photoprotection and adjunctive skin care benefits, thereby supporting its utility as a novel dermatocosmetic composition for the prevention of photoaging and enhancement of skin health."
