MUMBAI, India, Nov. 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202517060310 A) filed by De Beers Uk Ltd., London, on June 24, for 'optical characterisation of a gemstone.'

Inventor(s) include Suganthan, Shan; Bodhinayake, Sud; Felix, James; Powell, Graham; Lanigan, Peter; and Nikiforov, Ivan.

The application for the patent was published on Nov. 7, under issue no. 45/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An optical characterisation method of a gemstone is provided, the gemstone being at least partially transparent at a first wavelength of light and at a second wavelength of light. A first step of the method comprises illuminating the gemstone with diffused light at the first wavelength, detecting transmission of light through the gemstone at the first wavelength with a first optical detector, and generating a bright field digital image. The presence of inclusions in the gemstone is determined from the bright field image. A second step of the of the method comprises illuminating the gemstone with collimated light along an optical axis at the second wavelength, detecting light propagating at a non-zero angle with respect to the optical axis after interaction with the gemstone, and generating a second digital image. The presence of inclusions in the gemstone is determined from bright field image and the presence of cracks from the dark field image."

The patent application was internationally filed on Dec. 13, 2023, under International application No.PCT/EP2023/085549.
