MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641001209 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 6, for 'organic sanitary napkin produced from cissus quadrangularis stem fibre for sustainable menstrual hygiene.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Banupriya D; Dr. H Archana; Dr. Deepti Susanna; and Dr. Monika Venkatachalam.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "This invention concerns the creation and manufacture of a biodegradable, organic sanitary napkin derived from the stem fibres of pirandai (Cissus quadrangularis). It offers an environmentally responsible, hypoallergenic, and sustainable substitute for conventional sanitary pads made from synthetic materials. The napkin is produced through steps such as fibre extraction, pulping, bleaching, forming layered absorbent structures, sterilization, and packaging. The invention aims to lower environmental pollution, improve menstrual hygiene safety, and generate livelihood opportunities for local communities."
