MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631050875 A) filed by Jis College Of Engineering, Kalyani, West Bengal, on April 21, for 'portable electric arc furnace.'

Inventor(s) include Trideb Sarkar; Shreyam Manna; Shishir Kumar Biswas; Anal Ranjan Sengupta; and Palash Biswas.

The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a compact and portable electric arc furnace designed for small-scale metal melting and recycling applications. The furnace comprises a refractory-lined furnace body, a removable crucible for holding metal scrap, and an electrode assembly configured to generate an electric arc within the furnace chamber. An electric arc welding machine is used as the primary power source to supply controlled current to the electrodes for producing the arc heat required for melting metals such as mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other recyclable scrap materials. The invention enables small fabrication workshops to perform on-site melting and casting of metal waste, thereby reducing dependency on externally sourced cast components, minimizing material wastage, and lowering production cost. The furnace is portable, energy-efficient, cost-effective, and suitable for small workshops, educational institutions, and experimental metal processing applications."
