MUMBAI, India, Oct. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202547093787 A) filed by Qualcomm Incorporated, San Diego, on Sept. 30, for 'positioning signals method using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces.'
Inventor(s) include Wu, Zhikun; Zhang, Yu; Gaal, Peter; Chen, Wanshi; Manolakos, Alexandros; Lei, Jing; Lee, Hyojin; and Elshafie, Ahmed.
The application for the patent was published on Oct. 31, under issue no. 44/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A method for providing positioning signals with a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) includes selecting a movable assistant transceiver; receiving, at the RIS, a plurality of sequential positioning assistance signals (PASs) from the movable assistant transceiver; and directing the plurality of sequential PASs, via the RIS, at a plurality of direction angles, each corresponding to a respective one of the sequential PASs. Viewed from an alternative perspective, the method may include receiving, at a movable assistant transceiver, a request for assistance; and responsive to the request, transmitting, from the movable assistant transceiver to the RIS, a plurality of PASs for direction by the RIS. RIS-assisted positioning of a UE may be provided even in the absence of PRS signals from a gNB or other TRP that is separate from the RIS."
The patent application was internationally filed on May 12, 2023, under International application No.PCT/CN2023/093782.
