MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641049585 A) filed by Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute Of Science And Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 18, for 'process for biomethane production from petroleum coke using pretreatment and anaerobes.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. R. Ravikumar.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Process for Biomethane Production from Petroleum Coke Using Pretreatment and Anaerobes The present invention discloses a process for producing biomethane from petroleum coke using controlled alkaline pretreatment and anaerobic microbial digestion. Petroleum coke is subjected to alkali treatment to modify its structural properties, thereby enhancing its bioavailability. The pretreated substrate is introduced into an anaerobic system containing a coal-derived microbial consortium capable of degrading recalcitrant carbon structures. The process enables direct conversion of petroleum coke as a primary substrate into biomethane without the need for co-substrates or conductive additives. Simultaneous bioleaching of heavy metals and desulfurization occur during digestion, improving environmental compatibility. The integrated approach enhances microbial interaction and facilitates efficient methane generation from an otherwise non-biodegradable industrial by-product. The invention provides a scalable and sustainable pathway for valorization of petroleum coke into renewable energy."
