MUMBAI, India, July 25 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411002023 A) filed by Council Of Scientific And Industrial Research, New Delhi, on Jan. 10, 2024, for 'process of depolymerization and upcycling of polyolefins to value-added products.'

Inventor(s) include Nagaraju Barsu; Samir Huzur Chikkali; Ganeshdev Padhi; Kishor Vilas Khopade; and Nageswararao Moyilla.

The application for the patent was published on July 25, under issue no. 30/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides a process of ruthenium-catalyzed dehydrogenation of the polyolefin followed by tandem isomerization and cross-metathesis to synthesize the linear alkyl benzene and dodecene derivatives. The dehydrogenation of polyethylene using ruthenium catalysis derived up to 3.38%, of double bonds; with 90% of the recovered polyolefin material. The recovered unsaturated polyethylene was further subjected for isomerization and cross-metathesis for the synthesis of dodecene as the major products and linear alkyl benzene derivatives selectively in a tandem manner. The developed strategy demonstrates the approach for the successful upgradation of polyolefin waste."
