MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122133 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'self-driving cars using traffic sign and lane detection.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Kumar K; and Mr. Aditya Sumit Oberoi.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a method (100) for autonomous vehicle navigation. The method includes receiving (102) an input image from a vehicle-mounted camera, applying (108) a convolutional neural network model to classify traffic signs, applying (114, 116) image processing techniques to detect lane boundaries, and generating (118) unified perception output for vehicle control based on traffic sign classification and lane detection results. The method converts (204) the input image to grayscale and classifies (212) the traffic sign into one of forty-three categories using the convolutional neural network model. The method applies (304) Canny edge detection to identify lane boundaries and applies (307) Hough Transform to detect lane lines. The method processes (404) individual frames from real-time video stream and combines (410) convolutional neural network sign recognition results with lane geometry data."
