MUMBAI, India, Sept. 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202421021149 A) filed by Tata Autocomp Systems Limited, Pune, Maharashtra, on March 20, 2024, for 'sheet molding compound composition and process for forming a high performance sheet molded component.'
Inventor(s) include Maity, Sudhangshu; Chauhan, Akshay; Saini, Suresh; and Sinha, Samit.
The application for the patent was published on Sept. 26, under issue no. 39/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a sheet molding compound (SMC) composition for making a high-performance sheet molded component. The SMC composition includes curable thermoset unsaturated polyester resin, nano and micron-sized inorganic ATH and calcium carbonate particulate fillers and reinforced with chopped and mat glass fibers. Said composition further includes curable agent, thickening agent, and special flow additives. The present disclosure also discloses a simple, cost effective, less-energy intensive process for preparing a high-performance sheet molded component. The SMC composition with chopped glass fiber along with the woven roving mat glass fibers is useful for fabricating molded parts with high mechanical performances for a variety of applications including internal and external body panels/parts of heavy commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles and railway applications. The molded parts prepared with the disclosed process and the SMC composition have extremely good surface finish and very good physical and mechanical properties."
