MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641051426 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 22, for 'smart cane for visually impaired.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A smart cane (100) for visually impaired users is disclosed. The cane (100) includes a cane body (102) having a handle (104) and a shaft (106), an ultrasonic sensor (110) mounted on the shaft (106), a LiDAR or time-of-flight sensor (112) mounted on the cane body (102), and an inertial measurement unit (114) disposed within the cane body (102). A processing unit (128) receives sensor data and detects environmental hazards. A haptic feedback unit (116) associated with the handle (104) is actuated by the processing unit (128) to generate tactile guidance. A rechargeable battery (130) and a power management unit (132) supply electrical power. An emergency communication unit (134) transmits geographic location information upon actuation of an emergency trigger (136) positioned on the handle (104) or upon detection of a fall event based on motion and tilt data."
