MUMBAI, India, Aug. 8 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202421007829 A) filed by Borosil Renewables Limited, Maharashtra, on Feb. 5, 2024, for 'solar glass composition with reduced brittleness and enhanced mechanical strength.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Jeetendra Sehgal; and Biswanath Sen.
The application for the patent was published on Aug. 8, under issue no. 32/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Solar Glass Composition with Reduced Brittleness and Enhanced Mechanical Strength 5 The present invention discloses a novel solar glass composition designed to enhance mechanical durability and reduce brittleness, thereby improving resistance to crack initiation under stress. Solar glass undergoes significant stresses during its lifecycle, including manufacturing, transportation, installation, and environmental exposure, which can lead to crack formation and premature failure. The invention addresses these 10 challenges by carefully balancing key components such as Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), Magnesium Oxide (MgO), Calcium Oxide (CaO), Sodium Oxide (Na2O), and Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3) within specific concentration ranges. The glass composition expressed in weight percent on an oxide basis maintains an optimal range of 60 - 80% SiO2, 1.5 - 8% MgO, 0 - 5% Al2O3, 8 - 17% Na2O, 5 - 13% CaO. The invention 15 introduces a Resistance to Crack Initiation Factor (RCIF), wherein, RCIF = 4.5 ensures a crack initiation load of at least 1000 grams-force (gf), significantly improving the glass's ability to withstand external stresses. The optimized composition achieves a brittleness index (B) of less than 6.7 m?, enhancing the glass's toughness and durability."
