MUMBAI, India, July 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541060125 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on June 24, for 'spring retractor for mandibular condyle fracture fixation.'
Inventor(s) include Gouthamkumar V; Murugesan K; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on July 11, under issue no. 28/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Retraction during condylar fracture reduction and fixation can be an effort-taking and timeconswning process. Conventionally retraction is done manually by using langenbeck retractors. This requires a minimwu of two assistants to the operating surgeon who has to manually retract during the process. Meanwhile, there are a lot of instances of underretraction by the assistants due to fatigue or over-retraction due to undertrained assistants. Manual over-retraction can also produce injury to the facial nerve that can lead to facial nerve palsy. There can be accidental slippage of the retractor during fixation which can lead to change in the reduction or lead to injury of the the soft tissue by drill. The aim of the current spring design is to eliminate the above-quoted disadvantages."
