MUMBAI, India, July 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202311086057 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group Ag, Stuttgart, Germany, on Dec. 16, 2023, for 'system and method for sensing vitals of occupants in a vehicle.'

Inventor(s) include Prateek Singh; Namitha Bhat Kundapura; and Madhukesh Manevarthe.

The application for the patent was published on July 4, under issue no. 27/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a system and method for sensing vitals of occupants in a vehicle. It involves an image acquisition unit and a controller. The image acquisition unit captures infrared (IR) multimedia frames (202) comprising at least one of the occupants. The controller receives, from the image acquisition unit, the captured multimedia frames (202); determines, by analyzing the received multimedia frames (202), facial features (204) of the occupants; identifies one or more Region of Interests (RoI) (206) on the basis of the determined facial features (204); and converts the one or more identified RoI into time series data. The controller (104) computes spatial pixel averages (210) of the time series data; and feeds the spatial pixel averages (210) into vitals determining modules which determine the vitals (212) of the occupants comprising heart rate (212-1), respiratory rate (212-2), breathing direction, and stress level (212-3)."
