MUMBAI, India, Oct. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411029758 A) filed by Batx Energies Private Limited, Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh, on April 12, 2024, for 'system for extracting rare earth metals from black mass of spent lithium-ion batteries.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A system (100) for extracting rare earth metals from black mass of spent lithium-ion batteries, the system comprises first reactor (102) configured to perform leaching of black mass resulting in formation of aqueous solution, thereby obtaining leach liquor, second reactor (104) configured to agitate a solution comprising sodium sulphide, sodium hydroxide, water, and leach liquor to obtain precipitated cake and metal-ion solution, third reactor (106) configured to agitate metal-ion solution with DEPHA (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid) and sodium hydroxide to obtain manganese sulphate and first raffinate solution, fourth reactor (108) configured to agitate first raffinate solution with P-507 and sodium hydroxide to obtain cobalt sulphate and second raffinate solution, fifth reactor (110) configured to agitate the second raffinate solution with sodium carbonate to obtain lithium sulphate and nickel carbonate, and sixth reactor (112) configured to agitate nickel carbonate with water and sulphuric acid to obtain nickel sulphate."
