Abstract: The present invention relates to a computer-implemented method and system for estimating a critical gap (Tc) at uncontrolled intersections under mixed traffic conditions. The method comprises receiving a dataset of accepted gaps (Ai) and rejected gaps (Ri), initializing a critical gap value, and computing deviations between the critical gap and the observed gap values. An objective function based on the sum of absolute deviations is formulated and iteratively minimized using an optimization process to determine an optimized critical gap. The estimated critical gap is positioned between distributions of accepted and rejected gaps, ensuring consistency with gap-acceptance behavior. The method does not rely on assumptions of driver homogeneity and remains effective in scenarios with limited or zero rejected gap observations. The invention provides a robust, accurate, and computationally efficient solution for critical gap estimation under heterogeneous traffic conditions.
