MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411096126 A) filed by Birla Institute Of Technology & Science Bits, Pilani on December 05, 2024, for A Contact Detection Device For A Micromiller.

Inventors include Sumitava Paul; Sethurao Gururaja; Kundan Kumar Singh; N. Suresh Kumar Reddy; and Brajesh Kumar Panigrahi.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: A contact detection device (102) for micromiller (200) includes microcontroller with an RC delay circuit (106) and an LED indicator (104) to detect contact between the cutting tool (202) and the workpiece (204) by measuring changes in resistance and capacitance when the cutting tool (202) makes contact with an electrically conductive workpiece (204) of the micromiller (200). A method (300) for detecting contact between the cutting tool (202) that is configured within a spindle (202A) of the micromiller (200) and the electrically conductive workpiece (204) mounted on a fixture of the micromiller (200) for advancing the cutting tool (202) towards the workpiece (204) in incremental steps along Z-axis for milling operation upon detecting contact between the cutting tool (202) and the workpiece (204) by the microcontroller (106).
