Abstract: A cost-efficient metal three-dimensional (3D) printer using Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology is disclosed. The system integrates a modified Cartesian 3D printer platform with an inverter-based Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) system, an argon shielding gas delivery mechanism, and a microcontroller-based motion control system. The printer employs a two-axis (X-Z) configuration for layer-by-layer metal deposition, utilizing an Arduino Nano microcontroller and A4988 stepper motor drivers for motion control. The system operates in a semi-automatic mode wherein an operator controls deposition parameters using potentiometers and push buttons. The metal build platform is fabricated from Mild Steel to withstand high welding temperatures. The use of readily available components including consumer-grade 3D printer frames, inverter welding machines, and open-source microcontroller platforms significantly reduces system cost while maintaining functional metal deposition capability. The developed system demonstrates the feasibility of accessible and scalable metal additive manufacturing for academic institutions, research laboratories, and small-scale industrial applications.
