Abstract: The present invention relates to an antimicrobial air filtration system for reducing airborne microbial load in indoor environments and grain storage facilities. The system comprises a porous air filter substrate coated with plant-extract-mediated green synthesized metal nanoparticles selected from silver nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanoparticles, copper oxide nanoparticles, or combinations thereof. The nanoparticles exhibit enhanced antimicrobial activity against airborne bacteria and fungi when contaminated air passes through the filtration media. The plant extract contains naturally occurring phenolic and flavonoid biomolecules that act as reducing and stabilizing agents during nanoparticle synthesis. The invention further provides a method for preparing the antimicrobial filtration media, including nanoparticle synthesis using aqueous plant extracts, suspension formation, dip-coating of the porous substrate, controlled withdrawal for uniform deposition, and drying under ambient or thermal conditions, preferably at 40-80°C, to ensure stable nanoparticle fixation. The filtration system is particularly suitable for deployment in grain storage ventilation to reduce fungal spore circulation, wherein silver nanoparticles offer higher antibacterial reduction and zinc oxide or copper oxide nanoparticles provide improved antifungal performance.
